Styling Shelves: How to Tips

Inspiration & Design No Comments

Styling shelves can seem overwhelming, but it’s such a great way to change the look of a room and add character. I love how easy it is to make a space look different just by swapping out the decor.

I am a huge fan of anything that looks distressed, beat up and like its been around for a while. For me, it’s all about the character, charm, and interesting stories these pieces represent. They are some of my favorites finds and I like to incorporate them throughout the house. The more worn and weathered the better. Old wood is usually my go-to base to create open shelves because of the character and texture it adds…..and it’s super cheap.

I happened to stumble across these bookends and inspiration hit me……they would make an amazing shelf.

Bookends and an old piece of wood, the perfect shelf. So easy and what a great combination, they were meant for each other.  Now comes the trickier part, decorating it.

When it comes to styling shelves I try to tackle them bit by bit. I like to think about small groupings. What pieces do you have that would look good together? Groupings and layers add depth and movement drawing your eyes in, following each item, keeping the flow interesting. Start with one piece to use as your focal point and build off of it.

Try to incorporate things that you like. Use pieces that flow and work together while adding height, texture, dimension, and character. This is typically what I base my designs off of. Oh, and of course….feeling. Pretty is important, but too pretty for me can make things look cold, sterile, and over-styled which is the opposite of the warm, inviting and homey vibe I want to create.  I am sure there are important design rules to follow when it comes to styling shelves, but I’m not looking for my house to be a textbook example. It’s all about what you like and makes you feel good.

Because I am such a visual person, I like to figure it out as I go. Once I see something on the shelf it makes it easier for me to think of different ideas and pieces that I can use. I’ll add something, take a step back, move it around a little and keep adding and moving until I end up with a look I like. Most of the time this ends up being the one I originally started with in the first place. Go figure…I just need to see all my options!

Keep it simple! While shelves can be a great place to showcase all your collectibles, follow the rule of less is more. Blank space is ok, you don’t have to fill the entire shelf. Overcrowding not only makes it a pain to dust (if you actually dust, cause really, why) it also makes it busy and overstimulating. If it’s too cluttered it can be overwhelming and difficult to focus, causing feelings of stress and anxiety. Now, if you want people to quickly leave the room or your house, this may be the perfect strategy!  So clever! It’s important to keep in mind that the things around us influence our mood and how we feel. This ultimately means they drive our thoughts and behavior, impacting how we engage and respond.

Photos, kids artwork, clocks, mirrors, jars, vases, candles…..I could go on and on with ideas. Think about what you like and try to incorporate it. Don’t limit your ideas because an item belongs in a certain “place.”  Dishes, pitchers and cake stands don’t have to stay in the kitchen, prints, posters, and sign don’t have to be hung on the wall, lamps aren’t only for tables and outside decor doesn’t have to stay outside.

Keeping these ideas in mind will simplify the process, reduce your anxiety, and help you find the inspiration you need when styling shelves.

My style is simple with lots of natural textures, neutral colors and interesting “character” items. Everything I bring into my designs needs to “feel” good, warm, and cozy. Think big hug……that’s the feeling I want to you to have and my decor to represent.

How would you describe the “feelings” you like to create in your home?

I would love to hear your ideas and see your designs. Add your photos and comments below.
