When we started, the kitchen was a small area that divided the mudroom, dining room, and living room. By changing the layout and design we transformed this space into a gorgeous focal point of the home. Now it’s bright and open making the main floor more inviting and welcoming. It’s become the gathering place and the heartbeat of our home.

These cabinets are custom made and in fantastic shape! We are repurposing and salvaging as much as we can.
This hallway connects the kitchen on one side and the guest bathroom in the entryway on the other.
The wall with the refrigerator and the adjoining wall of cabinets with the microwave and stove created a hallway between the kitchen, guest bathroom, and the living room. These walls were not purposeful and this was space that we could leverage to expand the kitchen and open it up. Since there weren’t any structural reasons preventing keeping us from knocking them out, we demoed them both. With both of the walls being adjacent to the entryway and living room by removing them we opened up these areas and the entire upstairs layout.
How do you not love this view?! All of the natural light coming in from the windows is absolutely incredible. These are some of the best features in the room. Gorgeous!
Throughout the renovation our goal was to salvage and repurpose as much of the existing cabinets and framework that we could. Other than the island, the only new cabinetry added were the small cabinets on each side of the stove.
We added new appliances, a custom hood, and a custom island, which is one of my favorite pieces.
For the hood, we incorporated the same wood used for the mantels and our custom stair railing [HERE]. I am not a big fan of matchy, matchy, but I do believe elements should compliment and work together to create cohesion and flow.

So, one of the things I have been adamant about is keeping this space open. We didn’t do all the work of knocking out wall and pillars to block the flow and openness. When it came to the furniture for the living room I intentionally avoided putting any of it along the area facing the kitchen. I didn’t want to create any kind of separation or division between the rooms. By keeping this area open it feels like one big room with no real start of stop, which was the goal. I was also super picky about the barstools I choose for the island. I didn’t want the backs blocking the view into the living room and vice versa. As you look to redesign a space it helps to be cognitive of little things like these. They can make all the difference in achieving the look you are going for.
When it comes to kitchen’s we all have our particular style and vibe. Personally I prefer mine to be simple, classic, and timeless. I am a minimalist who loves industrial, boho, and traditional mid-century styles that are timeless, classy, and fun. My biggest advice as you consider changing your space, keep it simple. With kitchens being one of the most expensive renovation budgets, focus on timeless pieces that will last well past the avocado green and shag carpet trends while not sacrificing your style and taste. It is fun and easy to frequently swap out the decor to change up the space. Transformation doesn’t always need an expensive budget. Just by adding a vase with fresh flowers, candles, a bowl of fresh fruit, or greenery you can create an inexpensive new look.
